The 1975's "Give Yourself a Try" Is Relatable Rock for Aging Cool Kids

It's the British band's first single from their new album 'A Brief Enquiry into Online Relationships,' out in October, and it's like a semi-jokey revival of early 00s indie rock.

It's tough to get a handle on the 1975: they're extremely talented and diverse musicians but their stylized image implies vacuousness. If you actually gave a listen to 2016's masterful (deep breath) I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are so Beautiful Yet so Unaware of It, you'd know the UK quartet have the tunes to match their immaculate visual aesthetics. The band have shared the first taste of their upcoming October album, the equally verbose A Brief Enquiry into Online Relationships (way to capture the times, dudes), and it's another pivot from their sparkling, 80s-inspired sophisti-pop.

"Give Yourself a Try" rides the kind of buzzing guitar riff that would have lit up the New York indie rock scene in 2002, and perhaps befitting that sound, it finds frontman Matty Healy getting reflective about being cool in your late 20s. "When your vinyl and your coffee collection is a sign of the times / you're getting spiritually enlightened at 29," he sings, later giving us the useful advice that "getting STDs at 27 isn't really the vibe." Yes, this is a real line in a rock song. It's pretty funny, to be honest. Listen to "Give Yourself a Try" below.
