The Star of the New Heavy Video Is a Mangey Cyber Cat

Yu-Gi-Oh! cards and weed also feature heavily in the new video from the Auckland duo.

The name Heavy may refer to the thick plumes of smoke that surround Reem Nabhani and Liam Dargaville. Or it could reference how hard the two have been building a reputation around Aotearoa from small DIY spots to playing at Laneway Festival in 2015.

Following the release of their debut album Lock In earlier this year, the Auckland beats/hip hop duo have just released the video for “Gold Print”. Featuring playful rhymes, some innovative production and one messed up cat, the video seems to stress the band’s priorities; fun and fooling around.

We spoke to Liam to find out more.

Noisey: How effective is a blowtorch in making grilled cheese sandwiches?
Liam Dargaville: It’s pretty fucking hopeless to be honest. I kind of half toasted it in the grill first to give it a head start, and even then that take went on for a while. Now if I had a propane torch instead, it would’ve got the job done in a jiffy.

Of the tracks on the album why did you choose “Goldprint" to make a video?
I guess we just wanted to do a little role swap seen as Reem is usually in the forefront. One of my biggest obsessions and vices are Yu-Gi-Oh! cards and we thought it’d be funny to make a ‘junkie’ type video for it.

What's the story behind that busted cat?
The legendary ‘Gross Cat’ goes back a few years as the unofficial 'Camp A Low Hum’ mascot. He would be at the front of every stage, tearing it up until one day his tiny heart just gave out. A year or two after his demise I found another exactly like him at a Salvation Army Store except he had all his mechanics intact. He could meow, purr, hiss and almost walk. After a few adjustments (the removal of some unnecessary fur) he became the new and improved ‘Gross Cat’. He mostly just chills in my room these days but he made a few special appearances at this years ‘A Low Hum House’, ‘Chronophonium’ and the Kirin J Callinan and Jack Ladder joint show.

The feature on our video was a no brainer for him, and we couldn’t have been more stoked about it.

‘Lock In’ is available here.
