Nolls Provide More Than The Bash and Crash of Your Typical Two Piece Punk Band

After some impressive cassette and seven-inch's, the Helsinki duo are set to release their debut album of driving post-punk.

Nolls are a guitar/drums duo from Helsinki who play an interesting and challenging code of rock that moves beyond the bash and crash that is usually associated with two-piece punk outfits. Their early cassette and seven-inch releases involved lo-fi post punk, tape loops and a lurching chugging rhythm that brought to mind Aussie legends feedtime.

The band have gifted us with a new track from their forthcoming album Strange Attitude which will be released in May on Lucked Out Tapes.

“Young” drives with a pressing energy and agitation. The opening line, "When I was young I had a restless feeling" forms the basis of the songs pace and mood. Take a listen to the track below and read a short interview.

Noisey: The track is called “Young”. What’s it like to be young in Finland in 2015?
It's probably the same as being young anywhere at anytime. Great expectations soon to be crushed by the harsh realities of life. We´re not young though.

As a punky-sounding two-piece you may get likened to No Age but there seems a more lo fi vibe to your sound.
The first time I heard of No Age was when some blogger wrote about one of our first gigs, but I haven't heard the comparison since then, guess we don't sound that much alike. Lo fi is definitely a big part of our sound, though our sound seems to have cleared up a bit from the first recordings. I think you're bound to be compared to one band or the other. One Finnish zine said we sound like art hippies doing their version of The Misfits.

You seemed to have gotten some notice with “Losing Game” but that was released back in 2014. Has it taken a while to get it out of Finland?
We didn't really make much effort ‘promoting’ the record so it maybe took some time before it got noticed. Its been bit surprising to us how its been noticed in some places and has actually sold better abroad.

A track from your last album is called “Bavarian Nightlife”. How does that compare to the nightlife of Helsinki?
“Bavarian Nightlife” is a field recording that was recorded at night from the balcony of a house in a small village about 100km from München. We have no idea who's playing guitar since it caught on the recording totally accidentally. How does it compare to Helsinki nightlife? Not in any way really.

'Strange Attitude' will be available in 2016 through Lucked Out Tapes.
