Groeni’s Video for ‘Hinde’ Comes Shrouded in Mysterious Static and Movement

Look deep and get lost in the Wellington trio's visual complement to sophisticated yet mysterious sounds.

The video for Groeni’s “Hinde” is as mysterious as it is beautiful.

In a transfixing piece of videography, that at times looks like it could be cloud covering Mount Victoria that overlooks the electronic trio’s hometown of Wellington, New Zealand, shapes blur and move at a mesmerising pace.

Directed by Wellington-based designer Joel Fear, the piece does a good job complementing Groeni’s organic presentation of assured EDM.

Following the release of a four-track EP by the same name, the video will be sure to help establish the band in New Zealand and beyond.

Check the video below and read a chat we had with the band's James Paul.

Noisey: The imagery for the video and band is quite enigmatic. Is this a conscious decision?
James Paul: Yeah, it’s definitely how we want to be received. We didn’t want to be in the video, but there was still a massive storyboard behind it, despite how abstract it is. We were part of an initiative that Redbull Sound Select and NZ On Air put together. We were awarded the video marketing grant and so we got to create something that we enjoy visually.

You have been doing a fair bit of touring, how do you find live performance?
We love it eh! When we started writing together for this recent EP, we were listening to a lot more dance music and we became much more interested in physical reactions to the music rather than emotional reactions. Our approach to the listener changed because of live sets, we thought if we just play moody, spacey things people don’t get to dance, so we thought let’s play some music to get people moving. Are you en route to a devoted fanbase of ‘Groenis’? Could they be the new ‘Beliebers’?
[Laughs] Yeah I mean we’re really trying to establish ourselves on the electronic music scene in New Zealand and internationally, we love writing the music and it’s something we want to do more and more.

'Hinde' is available now.
