Listen to Atlantic Thrills’ ‘Bed Bugs’

The Providence, Rhode Island band play a brand of surfy guitar pop that is hotter than a stuffed quahog.

Providence, Rhode Island may not be the first place that comes to mind when surfy garage rock is mentioned, but as their name suggests Atlantic Thrills are full of surging and punky melodic rhythm. This is not so much music from the beach but from the jukeboxes that blast during happy hour at the faded bars and taverns on the strip over the highway from the beach. Where tourists sip half-price margaritas, eat clams and soothe sunburn.

“Bed Bugs” a forthcoming track from the four-piece’s new record on Almost Ready is a shot of pickleback punk that also stings a little bit.

Listen to the track below and read a couple of things from Eric (lead vocals/bass) and Dan (guitar/vocals).

Noisey: I get the vibe that you are kind of a surf band that hates the beach? Maybe I'm wrong?
Dan: I was born on the beach, literally. My idea of a perfect day involves a Bloody Mary, a big ol' doob, and jumping in the ocean all within the first 10-minutes of me rolling out of bed. Sunset bocce, dominoes on the peer, late night bottle nosing, I love it all. I feel most comfortable covered in salt and sand that has been caked on by the sun.. It's the only place I truly feel within my element.

Eric: We love the beach! I've actually been trying to write a hit pop song to sell to Justin Bieber just so I can cash in and build a little studio on the beach in Mexico. Then maybe I'll finally record the mariachi surf album I've always wanted to make.

You have been compared to the Black Lips. Have you hung out/partied with those guys? Who do you think would have the more party stamina?
Eric: One of our first shows here in Providence we got to play and hang with the Black Lips and Vivian Girls. We'd been partying for about 48hrs straight leading up to that show so it's all a bit fuzzy. I vaguely recall Cole being really into moonshine so there were all these jars being passed around back stage. We partied with them the next night in Boston as well. From what I remember of those two nights of belligerence, I'd have to say we're about equal as far as stamina… Although, it is well known that Dan will always be the last man standing at the end of any party.

Dan: It's true. My liquor monster is quite insatiable. I think the last time I saw those guys i scared them a bit. My demeanor while intoxicated is somewhere between Bluto in Animal House and Louis Tuley from Ghostbusters, so I can see how they would feel that way.
