Premiere: Watch the Trailer to 'The UV Race Disgrace Space'

The Melbourne punks are set to release the sequel to their 2012 film 'Autonomy and Deliberation'.

The UV Race are set to release The UV Race Disgrace Space, a new feature length film that follows the Melbourne punks and friends on an outer space odyssey.

Judging by the trailer, the film includes a lot of wigs, costumes, musical performances and UV Race vocalist Marcus Rechsteiner hallucinating after eating a 3000-year-old dim sim.

Directed by Johann Rashid, and a sequel to their 2012 film Autonomy and Deliberation, the film again casts Rechsteiner, who according to his band mate Al Montfort is “the Ryan Gosling of punk” as the lead character. Set for release later this year, the film also includes appearances from a number of Melbourne music identities and bands including Dick Diver, Repairs, Miss Destiny and Drug Sweat.

Johann, who is now based in New York City, and Al sent us a recent email exchange that sheds some light on the film.

Johann Rashid: Hey Al, I miss you man. These days we see each other in small bursts but cram a lot in when we are together. Either I’m seeing you play, we are playing a gig, we are recording, we are working on the UV Race movie, we are eating Indonesian food, planning the next thirteen UV Race movies or I am filming you waking up on my couch after a crazy 22-hour flight. What have you been doing since we last did all of these things? Al Montfort: I miss you too Johann. Last time you were in Melbourne I think I saw you everyday or at least talked on the phone. Your work ethic often astounds me. It's a beautiful ambition that has been put to good use in the creative field. If you had grown up on the north shore of Sydney I think by now you would be Coles-Myer. Is it easier to carry on like an artist mad man in New York or in Melbourne or in Frankston? Johann: I think I’m a mad man anywhere I go. Although I noticed that in the last month, I’m talking to myself a lot more. I think it’s because I spent a month in my friend Donny’s house with no window. I just thought that it was night 24-hours. I did make a bunch of tracks for a new project though.

Al: Since I last saw you UV Race have nearly written another record. Lower Plenty are mixing a fourth LP. Snake and friends made their first live performance; it was at the opera house (la di da). Zeph [Pavey] put out that Russell Street Bombings record, Dick Diver are going to America very soon. I haven't been doing a real job the last few months, (first time in a long time) and it's a bit hard to just focus on creative stuff without something to push against (i.e. 9-5) Our new band Terry rocks. I wore a leather cap at our show last week. Johann: Terry sounds rad, bring me a record over, maybe we can do a show together. I played a show in a basement the other day in Queens. I’ll leave it at that. Fuck! Editing this film is tough! I’m laughing too much it hurts. The green screen is going to be really hard but awesome. What was your favourite scene to film? Al: When Moses was travelling through time and pulling bongs in every important era. That is 1996, 1999 and 2002.
I couldn’t stop laughing the whole night and then we got Mexican food. Moses was so stoned by the end of it too. Isaac from Soma Coma/Power is the next Jim Carey. Moses is the next George Clooney. Marcus is the Ryan Gosling of punk. Johann: Ha! My favorite scene was when I was in Australia last. We ran around like crazy, building sets and spaceships. I really felt like Marcus had stepped up his game in his performance, he was giving it everything, whilst also being really tentative towards the whole cast and crew. It really was fun!

'The UV Race Disgrace Space' is due for release later in 2015.
