Ty Dolla $ign Is on Everything Today, and He's Feeling Sexy

He linked up with Quavo and Gucci Mane on "Pineapple," joined Lil Durk and PARTYNEXTDOOR for "Breather," then topped both of those alongside French Montana on Tinashe's "Me So Bad."

Ty Dolla $ign is one of the most versatile and multi-talented people working in or near mainstream music. He's just as comfortable crooning over country as he is rapping in the forest. Give the man a bass guitar and see what happens. He seems to be making pop music for the fun of it, which is rarer than it ought to be right now, but all the more enjoyable to witness as a result. Give Ty Dolla $ign a bunch of awards. Make him President.

This is a great morning to consider such things. Ty is everywhere today, and he seems to be feeling sexy. First off, he released a single of his own, "Pineapple," with Gucci Mane and Quavo holding down the verses. It doesn't push any of the artists' boundaries—minimal trap beat, fruits as body parts, etc—but it has an amusing-enough hook, held down by Ty himself, so it's worth a couple of spins.

Lil Durk, who surprise-released his new LP this morning after splitting from Def Jam, brought Ty in alongside PARTYNEXTDOOR for "Breather." It's not a great song! It's a play at a steamy slow-jam that leads Durk and PND down some strange paths, running through a series of words that could also mean "vagina" while getting possessive along the way. Ty doesn't quite rescue it (who could?) but his intervention in the third verse is welcome, and he gets credit for avoiding euphemisms here: "All this drinking and this kissing got me horny."

The real winner is Tinashe's new single, "Me So Bad," a reggaeton-tinged bop with a beat that sounds a little like J Hus's "Did You See." Ty turns up between Tinashe and French Montana, dropping into the track with another hook. He's still feeling very sexy! "Running out of words to say," he sings here, "No talking girl, I came to play." But this time around the song is better, Tinashe's presence makes the whole thing feel less like a conversation between a bunch of dudes outside a strip club, and there's a cool country club video.

Ty Dolla $ign has lots of modes and moods. Today, he is feeling sexy. I look forward to seeing what he does next week.
