Deadbeat Beat Will Positively Lift You

Listen to "You Lift Me Up", a slice of pop goodness from the Detroit trio's tour cassette.

It takes all of 30-seconds into Deadbeat Beat's "You Lift Me Up" to realise that the Detroit three-piece know how to arrange and write a quality pop song.

Alex Glendening, Zak Frieling, and Maria Nuccilli have a soft spot for Fleetwood Mac, The Bats, Scott Walker, and the Velvet Underground, and it shows when Glendening sings "It's been five whole days that you've been gone" over lo-fi but melodic guitar.

Recorded and mixed by Jeff Else in Detroit last year, the track will be available on a tour only cassette single to be released on Frieling's Gold Tapes label. An album is due later this year.

Take a listen below and read a brief chat we had with Alex.

Noisey: You went to high school together. What was it like?
Alex Glendening: Maria and I met before high school, and started playing music shortly thereafter. We were friends with Zak on Myspace at the time, though he lived in Flint. The cool thing about our high school were that the cheerleaders were all freaks like us.

Do you listen to much music besides rock/pop and guitar based music?
Zak said his most recent record purchases were Yellow Magic Orchestra, Chic, and McCoy Tyner. I just picked up a Suzanne Ciani record at Ameoba recently, and Maria listens to a lot of electronic stuff, like Klaus Schulze. But we all really like pop music. The Bee Gees are Maria's favorite band.

What is "You Lift Me Up" about?
It is about when things are no longer going well in a relationship. It's also about facing a looming problem. It's about emotional manipulation, and being willing to be manipulated.

I like that it mentions the county line. Tyvek wrote a song called Wayne County Roads. Something about Detroit bands and county lines?
You enter Wayne County a little in from the Ohio border, around Flat Rock, Michigan. Once you hit it, it's kind of like a slap back to reality. I guess I mentioned the county line because the song is about waiting for someone to come home to face something uncomfortable. The Tyvek song is about Wayne County roads that are really awful, especially after winter starts to thaw. Sometimes it seems like everyone on the road has a low tire. The last time I saw the person the song is about, their band was opening for Tyvek. Their set was very good.
