HVNCOQ’s New Track Calls Out Australia’s Racist Media Reporting

Listen to "Blackout", the latest track from the rising Melbourne MC.

“Blackout”, HVNCOQ's latest track was born from the frustrations the young songwriter has experienced growing up as an African-Australian and being treated as ‘other’.

“In Australia the media spreads fear by continuously fuelling false stereotypes with stories of petty crimes supposedly committed by people of colour,” he tells us via email. “They are constant reminders that we are different, and because of this, unwelcome and to be feared. I want people to understand the daily occurrences that I will no longer accept. It’s not okay to want to get a cab late at night and have five pull over to look at you before driving off. It’s not okay to hear Pauline Hanson, a person with power, speak badly of your people and degrade our humanity. Not to mention that year after year POC continue to be over looked in line ups and awards shows."

Born in New Zealand and raised in Melbourne, HVNCOQ shows a lot of promise and his laid back and effortless flow has had some comparing him to Mos Def and Chance the Rapper. The kid is worth keeping an eye on.

'Blackout' is available Dec 1 on WVS.
