PREMIERE: Watch Brick + Mortar’s Video for “Staying Gold”

Drop what you're doing, grab your best friends, and get outta here.

There are two types of people in the world: criers and non-criers. Some of us, myself included, will literally cry over spilt milk (it’s really sticky and smells like mildew), while others can make it through a Pixar film with tear ducts untapped. Only God—and perhaps my therapist—can tell you why you’re born one way or another.

In case you’re not sure which of the two buckets you fall into, watch Brick + Mortar’s new video “Staying Gold.” The New Jersey duo—consisting of Brandon Asraf (bass, vocals) and John Tacon (drums, electric samples, vocals)—pull heavily on the heartstrings through their depiction of a sickly youth in a hospital bed, sitting anxiously as monitors beep and nurses flutter. In the spirit of punk rock insurgence, a friend helps bail him out, leading him to a world where the once-sickly boy is doing all the things kids should do—breaking into private pools for rowdy skateboarding, running through leaden suburbs aimlessly, drinking beer and flirting with girls. And duh, taking selfies.

“To us, Staying Gold is a rebellious anthem from an angsty kid making a statement that he's good, no matter what,” says the video’s director Rosco Guerrero. “We follow him in this film, who despite his incredibly difficult circumstances is strong as ever when he's with his friends. He stays gold.”

Sprightly percussion and Asraf’s crooning vocals bring the track to life; it’s a catchy yet chill indie-pop cut. The fact that only two guys are behind this wealth of sound is pretty incredible. Prepare to feel the feels with “Staying Gold,” and check out their album Dropped, out today.
