Stream Gawker’s Demo of Bratty and Lippy Punk

The scowling vocals seem to come from someone unafraid to roll around the soggy floor of a house party.

“Chongo”, a track on Gawker’s demo tape does as good a job representing the Calgary band as the above photo. It’s the musical equivalent of four dudes nursing beers on a shitty basement sofa. Two are wearing masks and one a pig snout. This is not cerebral music by any stretch, but the degenerate punk is perfect for a Friday night house party where the Molson is flowing. The lyrics are pretty much indecipherable but the riffs are fast and the scowling seems like it comes from someone not afraid to roll around a soggy floor.

The four jackanapes of Gawker have only been a band for around a year but their demo impresses with its bratty fun.

Stream below and read a short interview with the band’s Michael Couvillon

Noisey: You have been described as bratty but that’s how NOFX describe themselves.
Michael Couvillon: We used to play as a chamber-pop band until we drank one of Cokie the Clown’s tequila shots, and ever since then our music gets increasingly bratty with every jam. And every full moon we turn into cheeseburger crazed clowns. It’s not something we try to differentiate ourselves from but instead embrace it.

What is the main city kids in Calgary hope to move to when they older?
Everyone in Calgary dreams of moving to Fort McMurray.

Do many punk kids stay in Calgary?
Only the NOFX fans stay here unfortunately.

What do you have coming up?
We are writing and recording more songs that we are hoping someone will put out for us because self-funding our demo cassette has forced us to get second jobs. We haven`t toured yet but we have a show booked in Edmonton which is like a three hour drive.
