My newest girl crush, Charli XCX, has FINALLY released a mixtape in the form of Super Ultra, showcasing her thuggish talents via loads of sassy love rants, kind of like Adele’s 21 for the tumblr-wave generation. As well as being filled with Charli’s signature moody vocals, the eight-track offering is filled with teased basslines and bass claps, all alongside collaborations with the likes of my fav stripper-cum-rapper Brooke Candy, and producers Jakwob and Sinjin Hawke. There are a few hints of Winehouse-esque vocal drawls, but basically just listen because if there’s anything this year’s musical offerings have severely lacked, it’s a body of love songs that are actually catchy but don’t sound like a pack of wet wipes.
And in her official statement on the process of writing Super Ultra, she nonchalantly came out with one of the best quotes ev-er:
Videos by VICE
“Some songs were inspired by moments in movies – like “Dance For You” was inspired by the opening scene of Planet Terror, where Rose McGowan does the pole dance. I think that’s a really sad and desperate scene. It makes me cry when I watch it. I guess that’s all just personal shit though.
I don’t want people to be sad when they listen to Super Ultra. I want them to be happy. And I want them to dance. No one dances in this town anymore.”
I totally get you babez.
