Jump In the Truck and Drive to Gun Oufit's Dusty Western Rock

"Speed makes you a genius / Cocaine will make you rich / LSD shows you divinity / Everything's alright on opiates." So opines Dylan Sharp at the start of "Strange Insistence", a dusty new track from Los Angeles, by way of Olympia, Washington act Gun Outfit.

Taken from Out of Range, the band's fifth album, and their second on Paradise of Bachelors, it's a song does a good job at illustrating the band's warm and buzzed country rock tones.

Core songwriting duo Sharp and Carrie Keith, and original drummer Daniel Swire have swelled ranks to include bassist Adam Payne, and noise punk legend Henry Barnes of Man is the Bastard and Bastard Noise.

Punk has long been a part of the Gun Outfit approach and like fellow Olympians, Milk Music, they owe some gratitude to the freewheeling 80s band Meat Puppets. But whereas Milk Music digs into the the Meat Puppets' wilder debut album, Gun Outfit adopt the more country tinged elements of the 1984 album Meat Puppets II.

Judging by the opening lines of "Strange Insistence" the two bands may have other things in common as well.
