Macklemore issued a call for equality after an emotional performance of his song, "Same Love", in a much-hyped pre-game show at the NRL grand final at Sydney's ANZ Stadium last night.

The week leading up to the performance at times verged on embarrassing when the hip-hop performer became the focus of national attention due to his decision to play his equality anthem as part of his show in the middle of a national plebiscite on marriage equality.

Dressed in a gold lame jacket and with rainbow-coloured fireworks exploding behind him, the US rapper performed the song with Mary Lambert. After the performance, Macklemore told the crowd, "Equality for all," while the NRL displayed a sign on the screens at ANZ Stadium that read, "We stand for equality." He also performed 'Downtown', 'Thrift Shop' 'Can't Hold Us' and 'Glorious' one of his most recent singles off his new album GEMINI.

Earlier in the week former Prime Minister Tony Abbot tweeted "Footy fans shouldn't be subjected to a politicised grand final. Sport is sport!"

Macklemore has pledged to donate the Australian earnings of the single to the Yes campaign.
