Kye Kye Synths-Up Paramore’s “Ain’t It Fun”

The Portland electro-quartet remixes the colorful post-punk band’s hit.

"The challenge on a remix is to strip the song down to its core and then dress it back up again without taking away from the essence of what made the song special in the first place," says Tim Yagolnikov of indie-electro outfit Kye Kye. Yagolnikov and his bandmates/siblings took on the challenge with Paramore's Top 10 hit, "Ain't It Fun," which gets a remix package release tomorrow, June 24, through Fueled By Ramen.

Originally hailing from the Washington State suburbs outside of Portland, Kye Kye has developed a steady following across two albums, including this year's Fantasize. In their own material, singer Olga Yagolnikov's voice floats like the ethereal sister of Hayley Williams above beat-charged alt-pop tunes. Fittingly, Tim Yagolnikov knew how to work with a powerhouse soprano, underscoring it with some punchy bass and pounding synths.

"Hayley's vocals were a huge source of inspiration for the track," Tim says about the group's "Ain't It Fun" remix. "There were a lot of moments where the vocals all by themselves would dictate where the music went. I just tried to do my best to hear what the song wanted."

Like Paramore, Kye Kye have the unusual of distinction of being a self-identified band of Christians, though not a "Christian band," per se. Like Paramore, the band's spirituality is more imbued into the lives that fill the stories of their songs, rather than an explicit or omnipresent element. Unsurprisingly, the two bands found compatibility on this, their first time working together.

"It was great having Taylor [York, Paramore's guitarist] involved," Tim explains. "The conversation we had before I started was really the beginning of the creative process. He gave me a better sense of the song, and a better sense of the band behind it."
