It's one thing to be a rapper from the coldest North American city with a recognized scene, it's another to break free of the icy bonds that tie one to being yet another frigid R&B singer. VNCHY doesn't play by those rules, because VNCHY's eyes are set aloft to greater prizes. His new EP Eminent (the full title is cryptically trailed by numbers, dashes, and letters, which VNCHY explains signify a "sequence" of releases) has a vaguely experimental undercurrent that provides an insight into VNCHY's ambitions.This streak is most evident on previously released disco-y single "Unpredictable," but it's also present on album track "Not Sure," which rides a clattering, loping soul beat and features a strong pop chorus. Meanwhile, "Summer Chick" defies its sunny title with a claustrophobic beat and VNCHY's growling delivery, one of many different performance modes he adopts on the EP.
