Every Day Is #MakeWhatYouFeel Day For Brisbane Producer Feki

We speak with the rising beatmaker about Timbaland, Timberlake, and what the future holds.

Feki's drive for music was originally to only produce music behind the scenes. The countless days spent in harnessing his craft saw him hone his skills, weaving them into LA music collective's Team Supreme, who were doing beat cyphers every week back then. After numerous open auditions, he got his break on Volume 80. From then on, he was crafting beat cyphers much every week. "I wanted to try and grow an audience, as well as just develop my skills as a producer," he states. Beat cyphers would go for 20 or 30 minutes, so he needed to make his identity known with small timeframes. He did this by developing a signature which he still drops to this day in the form of his childlike "yeah" sample that is actually his little cousin. Incorporating this into his music came more or less as an accident. "I always wanted a tag or signature that made me stand out amongst the mix tapes. Though I meant to do it in a way that wasn't too obnoxious."

Running with the motto #MakeWhatYouFeel and springboarding from his online success of remixes and original works, Feki's respect for music stems from his parents, who coerced him into classical piano at the early age of adolescence. He then broadened his scope gaining an obsession with hip–hop after trawling the net for videos of Timbaland in the studio with Jay-Z and Kanye. "Timbaland was such a big influence for me, just in terms of getting me into music making. All the stuff he did for Timberlake and the two albums, 20/20 Experience and FutureSex/LoveSounds. That production was just so damn huge."

Buried within a signature vibraphone melody. He continues to turn heads with his electronic productions, from emotionally-charged originals like "Quiet Minds" and "Remember", to the future bass-saturated remixes for Years & Years, Urban Cone, Anna Of The North and Vallis Alps to name a few.

Teleporting in from different realms of space and time, his work on Vallis Alps track "Young" was one of those near-impossible tasks. "Before I even opened the stems for this one, I was like, should I even try?" He recalls. "I don't know. There's just some songs that you just don't touch." Not able to resist the urge he opened this one up taking "Young" to a much darker place resembling that of romance torn, though he leaves this all up for interpretation. Feeling "Original tracks are born most often than not when dabbling with remixes."

With the remixes, he starts with the a capella. "A production hack," he says, "I'll twisting and turn it whatever way I can without being too attached to the original. That way if the artist doesn't like it, I can take the Acappella out, and have an original there waiting."

He mastered the Vallis Alps remix, in less than a day. Feki aptly crushes tracks with a grab bag of mixed emotions, managing to flex his songs with a tangible human quality, a characteristic mostly devoid within the electronic music scene.

Capping off last year with highly acclaimed sets at Beyond The Valley and Listen Out. He's kicked 2016 off strong with killer sets alongside fellow Aussie heavyweights What So Not and Golden Features at Castaway Festival on Bribie Island. With his mini tour mid-stride and a string of remixes ready to drop any minute now, the Mutual Friends signee ultimately hopes to be dropping an EP at the end of the year, again with a bunch of headlining shows. "Last year I kept it really, really low key. This tour for me is still a big thing for me because I never really play shows. That's the focus I guess, 2016 was just to get out into the world, and play some shows. Also obviously releasing music in different quarters of the year. Hopefully I'll release a bunch of originals too. Ultimately an EP maybe at the end of the year, I'm not too sure. I've got a lot of songs lying around, so I'll have to sit down and really take a look at it."
