Like most people, DJs and producers have specific songs tied to events throughout their lives. In Crate Expectations, we extract a playlist from their memories to tell their story. We've recently gone down memory lane with Redlight, Alan Fitzpatrick, and MK. This time around we spoke to Butch.

What's the first song you ever loved?

As a kid I was a total Captain Future fan, I was obsessive about the series. Listening to the theme song before the episode started was like going through a portal to a new reality that only I could dive into and the key to get there was the music.

What are the first two songs you ever mixed together?

I can't have been older than 13 or 14 when I got my hands on these. It was totally the kind of music I knew I'd always love and want to play.

What's your guilty pleasure song?

Man, this is probably where I'll lose you guys, so let me thank you for sticking with me for so long, before jumping ship. Ok, here goes, I'll give it to you honestly… It's totally white, totally plastic and totally gets me into a great fucking mood within seconds.

What's a song you've had on repeat in the last month?

For me it is important to also listen to something outside of the standard 4/4 rhythm to chill and keep my mind agile and fresh. Right now I've got me my five, not like Luniz, but more like 5/4 which Dave said I could take.

Which track of your own do you love the most?

Forget Conan the Barbarain, this one, at the right time, in the right location brings out the Canaan God of Destruction. I always love the effect the tune has, after so smoothly building up for the first four minutes and then seeing the looks on people's faces. Man, this tune has really taken me places no other song has!

Which track of your own do you hate the most?

I'm not gonna tell you why.

What track are you most excited to drop in your sets?
That's my dirty little secret and I won't share it with anybody, not even THUMP. Sorry, this one I take with me to the dancefloor or my grave and nowhere else.

What's your favourite track that you wished worked in a set?

This track has fried my brain so many times and is one of the greatest loves of my life. More to the point, this is the song of my life and I spent two years of said life making an edit of this which both works in a club and isn't insulting to the original. You can hear that one below:

What's the last song you want to hear before the lights go on?
I have noticed some DJ friends of mine are totally ritualistic about with which song they end their night, but that's not my thing, I have more than enough different rituals. I love that I can just spontaneously pick a song which I feel is the right one for that moment in space and time. I very rarely repeat myself in my music.
