Get Lost in This New Sad Pop Banger from Skylar Fri

“Dream Too Much” is a shout out to those of us who would rather live inside our brains.

Daydreaming hasn't historically been considered A Good Thing. "Wake up and smell the coffee!" they say. "Welcome to the real world!" they also say. "Time to come back down to earth!" they say as well. "Keep yourself grounded!" they say too. Well, they, frankly, are dickheads – because daydreaming is fun and the real world sucks. Why would I want to think about self-assessment forms and the price of onions and what route is quickest on CityMapper when I could close my eyes and imagine that I am drinking a cocktail beside a swimming pool in a Jackie Collins novel or that I am, like, SHANIA TWAIN?

All of which is to say that there's a new pop star you may not have heard of called Skylar Fri who has released what is essentially an ode to getting completely carried away by your fantasies. It's called "Dream Too Much", and it sounds kind of like a mixture of Lana Del Rey, Sky Ferreira and all your fave 80s icons. "Let's go to America baby, you've come way too far to say maybe / Let's go east or west, I really don't care, 'cos every journey reaches somewhere," she sings, her voice floating over the gorgeous, synth-laced melody. So press play on the track below, turn up the volume and drift away to a place far away inside your brain.

Skylar Fri's debut EP Better will be out on Friday 19 May.
