Melbourne Won a Big, Kind of Made Up-Sounding Sports Award

Last night in Switzerland, Melbourne was crowned Sport City of the Decade. Was this the glory Angry Anderson foretold?

Last night in Switzerland, at the 10th Anniversary of the SportsBusiness Ultimate Sports City Awards, Melbourne was crowned Sport City of the Decade, a kind of made-up sounding award.

Melbourne claimed the award by virtue of winning the annual Sport City prize in 2006, 2008, and 2010. The title will be added to the growing list of flashy accolades, including World's Most Liveable City five years running, and City That Birthed Dolewave.

Taking out the prize against London, Tokyo, New York and Berlin, Melbourne's recognition as a destination for sports fans the world over is now forever etched in brass. The honour is described on the SportsBusiness website as "representing the city with the greatest impact over the last ten years".

Head Judge and Founder Rachel Church said she wasn't surprised that Melbourne came out on top; "The city has either been winner or runner up in the awards in the previous five editions, and boasts a major events strategy that many other cities have since used as a best practice guide for their own."

John Eren, Victorian Minister for Sport, addressed the win saying "This award makes an outstanding decade of the biggest and best globally-renowned events," citing the city's hosting of 2007's FINA World Swimming Championships, 2015's Cricket World Cup, and 2015's AFC Asia Cup. Melbourne should do the title justice, too, as it recently secured the International Champions Cup (soccer) and the Presidents Cup (golf).

So there's really not much left to do than sit back and enjoy perhaps the greatest thing ever to happen on a Melbourne sporting ground.

Nice one Melbourne.
