Blue Jays Minor League Pitcher Suspended 50 Games for failing to Take Drug Test

Andrew Case, a 23-year-old Class A pitcher in the Blue Jays' organization, has received a 50-game ban without pay.

Toronto Blue Jays minor league pitcher Andrew Case was suspended 50 games without pay Monday for failing to take a drug test, a violation of baseball's minor league drug program.

Case made 39 appearances between two minor league affiliates last year, posting a 3.10 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in his second season of pro ball.

Case, a 23-year-old Canadian native hailing from Saint John, New Brunswick, was a Cinderella story when he first signed with the Blue Jays, parlaying an impressive amateur showcase in 2013 into a professional contract. The then 20-year-old was playing for the Lethbridge College Prairie Baseball Academy when he was invited to participate at Tournament 12, an annual baseball event held at Rogers Centre for the top college-eligible amateur Canadian players.

At the inaugural Tournament 12, Case capped a strong showing by tossing a no-hitter with 13 strikeouts to garner interest from pro scouts.

The Blue Jays ultimately signed him days later, and Case made his pro debut with the Canadians (Toronto's short season Single-A affiliate) the following year.
