Mas Ysa's upcoming album Seraph is shaping up to be one of the best projects of the year. Each song—"Look Up," "Margarita," and now "Gun"—feels like its own exorcism. Mas Ysa is a project of constant catharsis: Thomas Arsenault seems to be constantly stumbling into a room, shell-shocked, and somehow coming to some grand epiphany that doesn't quite resolve itself into words. On "Gun," he has the help of singer Nicole Miglis, and the two of their voices intertwine as the song builds to its dramatic non-conclusion, dissipating into chattering blank space."I wasn't done / I wasn't beat" Arsenault wails, detailing the tortuous colllapse of, uh, something. A relationship, I guess: "you a found a boy / that's what I'm told / I had a girl / but I'm taking her home," he intones. Anyway, this song is entrancing and great and has no easy answers.
