Benin City feat. Tuesday Born - "Crush"

Before basking in the glory of new track "Crush" we asked Benin City about fist fights,

London-bred Benin City smush together everything from indie guitar riffs to electronica to a bit of spoken word and somehow end up with a satisfyingly vibrant sound instead of a big awkward mess. All of this is demonstrated neatly by latest cut "Crush" alongside Tuesday Born. But before basking in the glory of their new track, we forced Joshua and Tom at gunpoint (asked them politely over email) to answer our quickfire questions.

Why is this track great?

Joshua: As a Nigerian, I am culturally obligated to answer difficult questions with a question…who told you it was great?

Tom: This song actually convinced my friend to quit her job as a headhunter and move to China. Plus Gabe (Tuesday Born) is a bit of a genius. I'm obsessed with his track "Wake" at the moment. Stunning.

Favourite thing on your iPod right now (can't be an audiobook)

J: Jon Hopkins - Immunity. The soundtrack to the kicking of all the asses.

T: DivaGeek. It's so heavy.

Most annoying music question a journalist can ask (can't be anything we're about to ask)

J: What genre is your music?

T: "Sure, I'll write an article about you. What's your budget?" That one smarts.

Please can you make up a dramatic story about how you got into music?

J: I was on my way to a successful and fulfilling career as a sewing needle hole driller when I was accosted at the 38 Mare Street Bus stop by two Swedish Ninja Vikings from the future. They wanted me dead for a crimes against fashion, crimes I had not yet committed. After a fist fight that lasted all three seasons of Game of Thrones and a bit, they had me in a headlock, my pants down and an apple in my mouth. They were going to decapitate me when I telepathically pleaded with them via iambic pentameter. It made them cry. They decided to spare me, so long as I dedicated my life to eclectic music making. The rest is an album on iTunes called Fires In The Park.

T: I started with nursery rhymes. Next it was jingles. Then some guy at a club made me try acid jazz. Before I knew it, I was hooked on the hard stuff

What do you think you'd be doing if you had a proper job?

J: Reading VICE Magazine in bed, smirking at the terrible attempts at humour by an up and coming band named after an African city.

T: I'm afraid that this is the closest thing to a proper job that I can muster.

Can you sum up your music in a haiku?

J: Summer brassy vibes,

Just kidding, it’s well dark, mate,

Bring plenty Hankies.

T: Words that touch the heart,

Music that will stir the soul,

Please don't call it "jazz"

What's the best thing you've been in fancy dress?

J: A serial killer wearing a trench coat and Zebra mask.

T: When I was 7 I went to a Thunderbirds birthday party as The Hood. I rocked a bald cap so hard.

What would your death row meal be?

J: Hob Nobs and hot Vimto.

T: A giant creme brulee. And five Long Island iced teas.

Do you fold or scrunch?

J: Scrunch. The missus does all the folding.

T: I worked in a shop for five months when I had no gigs so I'd say my folding is of a professional standard.

What did you get your mum for Christmas?

J: A card. And dinner. She did not eat much that night.

T: A case of wine.

And what did you do for Valentines day?

J: The missus convinced me to watch The Notebook and Gone With The Wind back to back. Fucking wicked films. Gut wrenching endings there. No dry eyes. A bit of racism, but what the hell: HOLLYWOOD.

T: St. John in Smithfield. Bone marrow. Fucking delicious.

What's your favourite memory of public transport?

J: When I came back to London, for the first two months I would say hello to everyone I sat next to. The looks people gave me are the reasons I get up in the morning.

T: I grew up in a town on the Severn Valley Railway. Steam trains are the coolest things ever when you're 5.

Who's your favourite person on Twitter?

J: @Goobypls

T: @badadvicedog
