Amapô Channels David Bowie In Their Costumes Designed For Stardust

Amapô’s David Bowie-inspired costumes should probably be on every Ziggy fan's wish list for the next Carnival (or for your next night out, whatever). The custom outfits were made especially for the play Stardust, which was performed last weekend at Sesc Belenzinho in São Paulo, and are modern interpretations of the costumes Bowie wore when channeling his iconic Ziggy Stardust persona.

The tribute to the British artist was performed by contemporary dance group Silenciosas + GT'aime with Bowie's 1972 album The Rise And Fall of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars as the soundtrack. VJ/animator/programmer Jacques Kaufmann designed the video projections that contributed to the play’s scenery.

The invitation to create the costumes came after duo's friend, director Diogo Granato, saw pictures of the 'catsuits' Amapô designed for the Brazilian Carnival, and it makes sense because their clothes are already 80s-inspired, glowing, and super colorful. Check out the designs below:

Bowie’s songs definitely served as inspiration for the costumes. "His lysergic, sort of hippie rock arrangements, his crazy lyrics, and his protest songs—it's all in the costumes as well," says designer Carô Gold. She sent us some sketches and some behind-the-scenes photos of Stardust.

For all of you who can't wait to get your hands on these outfits, we asked Gold if there was any chance they would mass produce them. "If we could, we would only make these kind of clothes to sell," she said.
