Mazi Chukz's "Rotate" Video Is an Escape from the Worries of the World

The London-based afrobeats artist's gift for melody makes for a flawless tune.

Back in May, London-based artist Mazi Chukz released "Gyaldem Sugar," a delightful mixture of 90s R&B and afrobeats that would play as well at a family cookout as a late-night function. The Nigerian-born singer's music tends to brew these elements together, but what makes it especially contagious is his penchant for melody. That holds true in his latest Maleek Berry-produced single, "Rotate," which if you guessed right, is made to inspire people to do just that with their hips when they hear the track. Today we're premiering the song's video which features colorful scenes that perfectly pop with the song's energy.

"The song was recorded at Maleek's apartment in South London. With this record, I wanted to create a vibe that once you hear the beat drop with the melody, you get an involuntary head bop," Chukz told me over email. "We just kept freestyling until we found a chord progression we liked and the ideas just started flowing." The Wizkid-affiliated Berry, who has established himself as one of afrobeats' most promising artists of late, was an early collaborator with Chukz as a producer, before he made the leap to being a vocal artist. The chemistry is what makes "Rotate" such a hit.

When speaking on what he'd like to inspire in his listeners with the song, Chukz said, "The way the world is today and the worries which exist, I want each three minutes and twelve seconds spent listening to 'Rotate' to be a mini escape." Mission accomplished. Watch the video above.
