Australiana

Welcome To VICE’s New Series, 'Australiana'

We're exploring the bizarre state of being Australian.

For a country where almost one in four residents were born overseas, the projected image of Australia has remained unchanged for decades. We're still sold as the same salt crusted, sun-bleached battlers as our grandparents, and national myth making appears to have stalled in the 50s.

But in our new series, Australiana, VICE set out to explore national identity beyond the stereotypes, and invite those living under the radar to show us their worlds. We track through the country, meeting teenage burnout stars in regional Victoria, exploring Indigenous queer experiences in the TiWi islands, and a search for love in the outback.

These are the ignored, hidden, and occasionally bizarre stories through which we're offered a considerably more textured and exciting picture of our own country: one where things are often fucked up, but also funny, weird and moving.

Our first episode on teenage burnout stars, "Rage in the Cage," premieres on SBS VICELAND Wednesday July 19 at 8 PM. It will then be on the site from Thursday.

In the meantime, keep up with the rest of our Australiana content here.
