MIXED BY Synkro

One moment he’s dropping stone-faced drum & bass, the next he’s serving electric R&B.

One of my favorite things about the Brits is their flagrant disregard for genre. It's almost like every six minutes I look up from my computer and bass music has splintered off yet again into some cool new configuration. They're like good tailors—making a cut here, sewing a seam there, safety-pinning a hem so that the fabric fits just the way you need it to.

The genre-resistant minimalist Synkro is a craftsman when it comes to scrambling pre-existing patterns, rearranging codes until new messages emerge. When we first heard from him he was doing a Rastaman skank on dubstep labels like Smokin' Sessions and Dubbed Out. We all were in 2007, right? But hearing his new record, it's clear that he's kept quite abreast with the fragmentation that heavy bass genres have been experienced with the new decade.

Synkro's kept his grip on the dubwise tendencies towards obsessive sound design and dramatic negative space, but his recent work has delivered in a wide range of tempos, taking us from clicky drum & bass to digital R&B and instrumental hip-hop. One moment he's sounding like a stone-faced Metalheadz lifer, and the next he's serving Shlohmo realness.

His new EP Lost Here came out this week on Apollo Records, a division of one of the most groundbreaking and widely acknowledged techno and house labels of our era, R&S Records. He made us a mix that perfectly matches the new record—so if you like what you hear, go get your download on—and it's exclusive to THUMP. Dig in.

Cop the Lost Here EP on Boomkat in digital and vinyl format.
