AWE Drops More Creativity In "Griffin" Than Most Producers Do in a Lifetime

The precocious Team Supreme talent makes it look easy.

The first time I saw AWE, at a Team Supreme gig at the Echoplex a few months ago, I knew he was gonna make waves, and fast. Clad in a pastel colored windbreaker and rectangular spectacles, the effortless creativity with which he approached his productions was some Captain Obvious shit and he stood out even amongst his headily-oriented TS peers.

Within weeks, those waves had washed upon UK shores and eternal bass music don Plastician snapped him up to a Terrorhythm release – And this was all before the precocious LA talent's 20th birthday.

Most up-and-coming producers manage to write a beat, a texture, and maybe a hook for a track if they're feeling particularly creative. Then they wander off to the local weed dispensary thinking they've contributed something to society. AWE makes those guys look like busters. His new track "Griffin" is a trap-leaning club heater with more twists and turns than Bassnectar's hair. In it, he keeps a steady beat with nary a drop in sight while the tune snappily churns through multiple movements, never stopping to rest on laurels or to give the listener a moment to get too comfortable.

"'Griffin' is what happened when I sat down around a year ago and decided to make a pure festival banger," AWE says of the track. "I just had fun with a simple rhythmic motif and it wrote itself. Rarely do I write an all out club track so this was a nice change of pace - I somehow fit 303 acid basslines, dog barks, 1990s jungle samples and 808 kicks in a song and I think it works!"

Yeah, it works. Plastician agrees: "AWE's direction on this release and the way he sets out to produce in general are the perfect fit for the label," says Plastician himself. "I've always liked the idea of releasing music which fits in the gaps between various genres, seeking out to test new waters and daring to be different. 'Griffin' for me is one of the most unique pieces of music I've had the pleasure of playing in the past 12 months."

The tune comes out tomorrow on Terrorrhythm via Bandcamp and iTunes. West Coasters can catch AWE at the next Team Supreme gig on December 19th at the Echoplex.
