We Love Gordon Voidwell and Here's His Video for "1 Trap Mind"

The Coogi-sweater obsessed synth-funk-master gives us pure love and knitwear.

Here at Noisey we have a serious boner for Gordon Voidwell. For a start we've been listening to his mixtape, Bad Études, non-stop since we premiered it last month. It's the perfect blend of slinky funk and sexy-sweet R&B, topped off with glitter-speckled synths (some of which are played out on a white keytar, natch) and then there's Voidwell's effortless falsetto. You can download the whole thing here. (Pay particular attention to "Pure (Hollywood Colt)" please. So smooth.)

Second of all, not long ago we ran into Voidwell at a crawfish party in a DUMBO warehouse and he was wearing stonewash jeans and flashed us his sixpack.

On this basis (and his 2009 mixtape), we recently booked him to play a Noisey show with Dâm-Funk. He showed up in a pair of swimming shorts and a snapback emblazoned with "puszi//puszi//" which apparently means "kiss kiss/goodbye"—possibly in colloquial Polish. It's also the name of his girlfriend's feminist DJ collective. Jeez. We didn't think Voidwell could rule any harder, but then he dropped us the premiere of his video "1 Trap Mind."

Directed by Matt Kliegman, who's worked with Heems, Hot Sugar, and Kitty Pryde—not to mention being responsible for compositing the many Kanye's in the "Mercy" video—Voidwell had this to say about the concept:

"It's about the barbershop as a space for contemplating love and/or distracting oneself from being in love. It's also a simple homage to 90s Coogi sweaters and how they oddly look like abstract expressionist paintings."

Let's just take a moment to appreciate said knitwear.

As Mia Wallace once shouted: "I SAID GODDAMN!" Those knits are bold and Voidwell knows just how to wear 'em.

Do yoursef a favor and go check him out when he plays Glasslands in BK, on 3.31, alongside Mykki Blanco at a Red Bull Sounds Selects show curated by Afropunk. WHAT! And it's free?! RSVP here.
