Around The World in 80 Raves: Sick Sad World, Oakland

Unpretentious partygoers let their freak flags fly and mix with members of opposite scenes.

Around The World in 80 Raves takes you into the basements, warehouses, and back rooms where the magic happens—from Caracas to Calgary and back. Photos courtesy of Sick Sad World.

NAME: Sick Sad World
CITY: Oakland, California
RESIDENTS: Bobby Peruu, Neto, So What, Spaceghost, GuMMyBeAR
RECENT HEADLINERS: Total Freedom, Massacooramaan, Rusty Lazer, D33J, MORRI$, Friendzone, Depressed Teenager
VIBE: It's a shitshow—basically a place where all the sad people in Oakland meet up to get #CRYPHY (crunk and hyphy, if you're old).
VENUE: It started in a scary biker bar in the fruit shipping and packing district of Oakland before moving to a venue uptown. One of the bouncers there beat up Brontez from Younger Lovers, so we decided to drop that place. Next, we settled into this place called Rec Center Studios that was basically a storage unit in downtown Oakland. We had a good thing going there until it got shut down. Since then, we've been rotating venues trying to find THE spot.
COST: 0 - $10, depending on the night.
WHEN IT HAPPENS: Right now we do the party quarterly or whenever the vibes are right. We've been throwing it at basically any place that's willing to give us a chance to blow the spot up.

WHAT'S THE DEAL THO:
Where rave meets ratchet. Sick Sad World is a rare spot for unpretentious partygoers to let their freak flags fly and mix with members of opposite scenes. "We have punk kids chilling with ravers that are dating ratchet graffiti dudes because of our parties," says resident Bobby Peruu of his parties.

Sick Sad Oakland is known to draw even reluctant San Francisco residents to make the trek across the Bay. By fusing the likes of "YouTube rap" with bass music, they create a contemporary environment for the hottest producers, where they can perform for a warehouse of progressive partygoers (think ASAP Rocky producer Friendzone, and Nanosaur who has produced for Lil B).

UNFORGETTABLE MOMENTS: "Some dude got a blowjob on the dance floor. There was one time the dude who ran the Rec Center got attacked by a bunch of little people."

The crew also collaborated with fellow Bay Area collectives Trill Team SixYung Klout Gang, and Browntourage to represent Oakland's diversity with style and grace, right in the birthplace of the hyphy movement. Their next event, #HYPHYBIRTHDAY (September 6th) brings together nearly every Bay Area tastemaker to recreate the "plurnt" vibes of the party's earlier Rec Center days.
