Omari Kimweri, The Fugitive Boxer: VICE Sports Meets

VICE Sports spent time with the former Tanzanian boxer to talk about hiding out in Australia, missed opportunities, and sacrifice, and to watch him prepare for his last chance at Light Flyweight World Title shot.

At the 2006 Commonwealth Games, Tanzanian boxer Omari Kimweri fled the athletes village with the intention to defect from his homeland and live in Australia. In an effort to evade police, he spent nine months hiding on a tobacco farm, 300km north of Melbourne.

It was Omari's goal of becoming a professional boxer that made him defect from his home country. "You're not going to become a professional boxer in Tanzania, that's a dead dream."

Ten years on, VICE Sports spent time with Omari to talk about his defection, missed opportunities, and sacrifice, and to watch him prepare for his last chance at a Light Flyweight World Title shot. A loss means the end of his career. A win will keep his boxing dream alive.
