PREMIERE: Listen to Winstons' Manic Ode to Devotion "Do My Best"

The Brooklyn garage-soul duo make the kind of no-frills rock n roll that's best enjoyed live.

Winstons make meat-and-potatoes garage-soul, the kind of no-frills rock that's best enjoyed live, and they know this. That's in part why the Brooklyn-by-way-of-Virginia duo, who met while working at Baby's All Right, make a point of recording live to tape. No-touch ups, no retakes.

It's a bold move—live albums are generally something bands need to earn—but on Winstons' forthcoming second EP Black Dust, it works. The collection of songs, which drops October 2 on cassette and digital download through their start-up Bad Looks Entertainment, feels like discovering a lost recording from a beloved local bar band that deserved to make it big but never quite did.

The record's second track, "Do My Best," captures that raw spirit well. The song leaves little fat to trim, recorded in one go on an afternoon in July. It's a heaving, ramshackle ode to devotion that contrasts crooner-guitarist Lou Nutting's howl with Ben Brock Wilkes' manic clamoring on the drums. Pour yourself a bourbon and take a listen below:

Winstons will play a cassette release party for Black Dust at Alphaville in Bushwick with Wild Yaks, Acid Dad, Promise Land, and DJ Fascinator on Saturday, October 3.
