People like to front that they don't like catchy shit. As if their musical tastes are somehow so refined and esoteric that they can't possibly enjoy something as simple as a good hook. Bullshit. Writing a catchy hook—one that's not completely bland and generic—is an art, and Somos knows just how to make it work.The Boston band's new track, "Streets Upon Streets," off of their forthcoming split with Baltimore's Have Mercy proves how much the band has progressed in such a short period of time. Their debut album Temple of Plenty showed off the fact that they had the chops to play music that seamlessly flows from a heavier to a light melody. In "Streets Upon Streets," you can hear their skills at laying down nice, intricate riffs that ebb and flow with each other. But what's bigger this time around is that they've mastered combining their musicianship with the addition of the catchiest choruses possible. When you hear vocalist Michael Fiorentino sing that chorus hook of "It's a fine line, a fine line," prepare to have his voice and that melody stuck in your head for the rest of your day. And this really isn't a bad thing at all; it's a chorus that's able to be punchy and bittersweet at the same time, letting it stick around with you like a new friend.Check out the track below and look out for the Have Mercy/Somos split when it drops on February 24 via No Sleep Records.
