Kids These Days Grow Up: Stream Marrow's "Mother of Maladies," a New Song from the Chicago Band

There was a pretty cool band that emerged out of the Chicago music scene a few years ago called Kids These Days. Their music wasn’t exactly the most innovative and progressive stuff you’d ever heard (although their debut record Traphouse Rock was produced by Jeff Tweedy), but it was pretty damn good considering the group was basically a band made up of kids in high school. And in the past couple years, those kids have grown up. The frontman was Vic Mensa, a rapper who is now cool to like and someone who’s quietly becoming the protégé of Kanye West. What’s more is that trumpet player Nico Segal a.k.a. Donnie Trumpet, alongside drummer Greg Landfair, left the group to join The Social Experiment, Chance the Rapper’s band.

What we’re saying here is that there was a ton of talent packed into Kids These Days. Shortly after the group disbanded, though, a new version called Marrow emerged, led by Liam Cunningham, Macie Stewart, and Lane Beckstrom. Below, Noisey is premiering one of the first tracks from their upcoming record The Gold Standard (expected later this year) called “Mother of Maladies,” a chirpy little song that floats along a bouncy blend of pop and blues. Stewart’s sweeping voice is a force, beautifully illustrating emotional struggle without being too overt. It’s springtime, everyone. Let’s only listen to music like this.

Stream “Mother of Maladies” below, along with another early cut from the record, “Paulson.”
