NOISEY 042: YUCK

Date: 2011-02-26 | Venue: NORWICH ARTS CENTRE | Location: Norwich, UK

Yuck

Yuck is based in London, but really the band is a global hub for a few kids born twenty years too late. This grunge-pop four-piece came together in 2009, with members originally from New Jersey, Hiroshima, and London. Since then they’ve been quietly reinvigorating UK indie.

Yuck began when Daniel Blumberg and Max Bloom found themselves without a record label after the collapse of their teenage band, Cajun Dance Party. It was when drummer Jonny Rogoff and bassist Mariko Doi joined up that the bedroom tracks expanded into fuzzy anthems. Self-produced, mixed, and mastered, their self-titled debut was released through Fat Possum Records and the Pharmacy Recording Company, following a series of split seven-inches and tape releases through the blog and label Transparent.

Noisey met Yuck at Norwich’s legendary Arts Centre, which has hosted Nirvana, Oasis, and the Stone Roses. To their fans, Yuck are offering a sincerity that skirts clichéd rock triumphalism, and alongside other acts like A Grave With No Name and Fanzine they’ve become London’s freshest D.I.Y. headliners.
