NOISEY 025: PORCELAIN RAFT

Date: 2010-12-18 | Venue: OLD BLUE LAST | Location: London, UK

Porcelain Raft

A native of Rome, Mauro Remiddi’s been busy playing the lonely man of London’s lo-fi bedroom community for about a year now. Formerly of psych-pop outfit Sunny Day Sets Fire, the music he makes alone as Porcelain Raft sounds like it was made by a guy who spends a lot of time in a foreign country.

He’s a dreamer, like Kurt Vile or Nick Drake, but that doesn’t mean he’s a timewaster. When Noisey joined him for 24 hours we watched him write a brand new song. Then he shot and cut a video before picking up his gear and bussing it to a gig at The Old Blue Last. That’s a work ethic right there.

Some would claim Porcelain Raft was part of the international movement of bedroom nostalgics like Toro y Moi and Lonely Galaxy, but it’s with London’s DIY bands like A Grave With No Name and Banjo and Freakout that he has most in common.

Nevertheless, in his thirties, and surrounded by bands almost half his age, Mauro sticks out like a big Italian thumb. But watching him onstage, as audience babble fills in his blanks for him, you get the impression that he quite enjoys that.
