NOISEY 003: PICTUREPLANE

Date: 2011-01-10 | Venue: THE CENTRAL | Location: Los Angeles, USA

Pictureplane

Performing under the stage name Pictureplane, Travis Egedy has become the heir-apparent to everything good about 90s rave culture: UFOs, good house music, research chemicals.

Born in Santa Fe, Egedy moved to Denver in 2003 and took up residence at Rhinoceropolis shortly thereafter. This place is legendary. Founded in a crumbling warehouse in 2004 by Warren Bedell from No Funeral, it opened up the area to the mid-aughts crop of Load-esque art-punk bands. Now this punk house par excellence hosts all kinds of shows, the premier stop for underground bands touring the dust bowl.

Noisey shot him in Santa Monica at the Central, a day ahead of his show at the Echo. Pictureplane’s laser-lit rave-ups compliment the post-RISD crowd that’s found a foothold in LA recently. The city isn’t particularly conscious of its history, and there’s been a real freedom allotted to artists like Ryan Trecartin and Ashland Mines as they re-imagine the city of angels as an international art playground. Kids partying out there are feeding the ghosts of post-Soviet Berlin through the no-fi DIY machine, with dreamy house acts like Pictureplane setting the soundtrack.
