My Disco
Robert Luongo and brothers Liam and Benjamin Andrews formed My Disco in Melbourne back in 2003. Sounding at moments like an early post-punk outfit—think Wire or Gang of Four—My Disco is equally comfortable crunching out walls of dystopian guitar-noise of the Noxagt/Pink and Brown sort. The band has a comprehensive understanding of noise anatomy, building hypnotic walls of sound from repetitive riffs.
In 2010 My Disco recorded their third studio album titled Little Joy. They travelled to Chicago to work with legendary recording engineer Steve Albini—a dream come true for a band whose namesake is song by Albini’s own post-punk outfit Big Black. The band also collaborates with their Aussie brethren, most notably Mikey Young and Brendan Suppression of the Eddy Current Suppression Ring.
In concert, the band plays emotionally charged sets, cathartic for both the band and the audience. My Disco attacks their instruments with bleary ferocity and turns the amps up to early-Swans volume. The music is minimal enough to slowly settle inside of listeners, but loud enough to shake the dust wherever it lands. They’ve developed into one of Australia’s most interesting and formidable bands and continue to grow organically as a unit, refining their creative vision without any interest in irrelevant industry expectations.
