Munk
Electronic music has remained Germany’s prime sonic export for decades. That said, you could call Munk a traditionalist—his influences range back to Kraftwerk and Giorgio Moroder, the originator of the “Munich Sound.” Far from just going through the motions, however, Munk makes electro fun again in the face of a German scene dominated by liveried house and techno productions.
Munk is Mathias Modica, the co-founder of Gomma, the famed Munich-based electro label and graphic collective. Gomma has built an international reputation for redifining electronic music, evolving the sounds of disco, new wave, and funk to turn heads and move feet. Think of it as the German DFA, and check the back catalog for feature guest spots from LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy.
With his success growing, Modica’s getting tired of spinning the same records every night as a career DJ. Lately he’s thrown together a live act with a swath of genre luminaries. Electro heads may recognize Ben Mono on guitar and POLLYester on bass. This is electro brought to life, with a live show that rocks clubs across Germany.
