NOISEY 017: FACTORY FLOOR

Date: 2010-12-14 | Venue: BUTLINS, MINEHEAD (ATP FESTIVAL) | Location: Minehead, UK

Factory Floor

Out of season, Britain’s holiday resorts are pretty desolate. What you’ll find are endless closed arcades, burnt down piers, and disused roller coasters battered with hail and the hammering wind. That’s where we found London favorites Factory Floor, strolling along the endless, sodden sand dunes around the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival’s In Between Days segment. The environment perfectly suited the band’s derelict, industrial disco.

At the outset of their career it was hard to distinguish Factory Floor from the mass of East London hipsters enamored with the high-minded art rock of bands like These New Puritans and Ipso Facto. But with the help of Giorgio Moroder-esque arpeggiators and a newfound dance sensibility, they’ve grown into an act that stand apart from their contemporaries.

A few years ago a band like this would never have been invited to All Tomorrow’s Parties. Now they’re the great young hope for music-obsessed festivalgoers, and the artists that influenced Factory Floor seem to be just as fanatical. Former Joy Division drummer Stephen Morris was so enamored that he ended up producing a few tracks, while Throbbing Gristle’s Chris Carter remixed their single Lying, further raising the band’s cred.
