NOISEY 086: CASPER

Date: 2011-07-05 | Venue: Kamp Club | Location: Bielefeld, Germany

Casper

Born in the province of East Westphalia, Casper grew up in the state of Georgia before returning to his native Germany. Now he’s back in Berlin, and a bunch of critics are expecting him to save German rap.

Back in the day, Casper fronted a hardcore band while simultaneously building his first rap crew, “Children Of The Corn.” He began releasing mixtapes that were heavily influenced by classic hip-hop. You’ll find all sorts of influences in Casper’s sound. The experimental thrust of post-rock, the drive of indie-rock, post-punk’s melancholy, the wonky vibe of dubstep, and the conciseness of classic hip-hop.

He manages to marry these diverse influences without sounding flamboyant or overambitious. The lyrics are some of the most lauded of his genre, even pushing German rap-standards to a new level. “Incomparable” might be the right adjective to sum this guy up generally—that counts for his records and his wild live show.
