Oberhofer

Brad Oberhofer started writing songs as a teenager. He recorded some of them in his parents’ basement in Tacoma, Washington, and began referring to his bedroom indie-pop act as Oberhofer. After high school he moved to Brooklyn, taking classes at NYU and interning for Matador Records. When he showed some new demos to his seniors at the label, they realized that they had a genuine new talent shrink-wrapping CD’s and opening mail in the back. That was the summer of 2009. Since then he’s locked down a live band, self-released two seven-inches and a collection of demos, and toured with Twin Sister and Tapes ‘n Tapes, among others.

People tend to fixate on his age; he’s barely twenty years old. It’s that youthful spark that defines the juddering, giddy live act, but he’s got a sense of insight beyond his years. Although he traditionally records all the parts by himself, Brad has fallen in with an extremely talented set of musicians. Bassist Dylan Trelevan is a high school friend from Tacoma, while guitarist Mat Scheiner and the skilled drummer Pete Sustarsic met Brad after his move to New York. Instead of frantically micromanaging the project, Brad allows his band mates to contribute their own parts and take a sense of ownership over the band, a mature and selfless move for a front man.
