NOISEY 032: RENT BOYS

The Rent Boys met at sailor training camp. Sounds wholesome enough, right? They grew up to be five cross-dressing garage rockers obsessed with stuffed animals. They tend to stick out in a city like Leeds.

In the months following the release of their debut 7”, the band developed their own psychotic cult of the cute. It’s a happy arrangement; they show up and put on a performance somewhere between The Cramps and Iggy Pop. When Noisey went to see them play at The Common Place, it was clear that these five men are hometown darlings. Their fans even brought along sacrificial cuddly toys so everyone can party in their torn up, wooly entrails. As for the music – well, grimy garage rock’s been broken for forty years, why try to fix it now?
