NOISEY 037: BARBARA EUGENIA

When Noisey shot Barbara Eugenia in São Paolo she asked us to meet her at a friend’s apartment. She was taking her friend to a yoga class to prepare for the evening’s show, the release party for her debut record, Journal de BAD, at Studio SP. The venue is located at the Rua Augusta, a previously rough area that’s been cleaned up a lot over the last few years.

In front of an audience full of underground musicians and celebrities, Eugenia performed with two of the most renowned guitarists in Brazil. Fernando Catatau is the leader of the seminal nineties rock band Cidadão Instigado, and Edgar Scandurra, who revived mod punk with his eighties band Ira! Onstage, her timid personality was in deep focus as her music swung between pre-psychedelic sixties rock and the melancholic moods of old-time Brazilian radio.
