NOISEY 136: PSYSALIA PSYSALIS PSYCHE

Psysalia Psysalis Psyche sounds like a medical condition, but It’s actually a Tokyo punk band that plays speedy, macabre ballads. They’ve been working on their toxic, decadent garage rock for the past five years, layering Cobain-eqsue wails over heavy psych-garage riffage.

They dropped their first record in 2008, a downward spiral of controlled feedback and ruptured guitars. The follow-up EP, Midunburi, was more overwhelming and intense, shocasing the band’s full potential. Into 2010 and 2011, PPP have worked towards their own rock formula and made more space for different arrangements as well as remixes. Within about a year, the release of X is to Y as Y is to Z (2010) and 21st Century Massacre (2011) saw the band forge remix relationships with oOoOO and Hype Williams, respectively.

As it looks, Psysalia Psysalis Psyche are becoming a soundtrack to a generation of young Tokyo rockers who no longer identify with the arena-sized bands of the past. A look at the band’s current teaser for “The United States of Psysalis,” can only mean one thing- Matsumoto’s joke prophesy of world domination may come true and PPP will become, a kingdom.
