The Best Hair at SXSW

It's all one big reenactment of the musical HAIR down here in Austin, and I've been shooting flicks of the best hair here and chatting up the faces below it.

This cartoonishly babely lady has been doing a maneuver that a lot of young women are up to lately: bleaching and/or dying the bottom foot of their very long hair. This is a good look.

"Gimme a head with hair, long beautiful hair. Shining, gleaming, streaming, flaxen, waxen, give me down to there hair!" Those words are pretty much the collective outcry of SXSW this year, and Noisey has been hanging out with Garnier Fructis all week bringing the message to the people. SXSW seems like one big reenactment of the musical HAIR, and I've been shooting flicks of the best hair here and trying to talk to the faces below it.

I'm so tired and achy that I'm losing my damn mind, but I somehow managed to chat up the good people in and around this week's launch party for our new Style Stage section with Garnier Fructis. Not surprisingly what was on their minds was hair, because I asked them about it. But more importantly I was really seeing a big shift towards the styles of the nineties, like brightly colored dyed hair and long flowing curly locks. Makes sense, considering that so many of the bands down here are paying lip service to grunge and alternative rock. I overheard someone the other day talking about the revival of the grunge movement and it sort of stressed me out. Also there are many seapunk styles floating around.

Anyway, here are some of my favorite hairstyles at SXSW.

This is Chase AKA the Mayor of Austin. In every word and action this guy is a nonstop Mardi Gras. He spreads his arms and like magic a giant green pizza sign appears above him. His hair is because of metal.

This lady had a group of friends who all had multi-colored hair. They were a full on rainbow connection.

This is Randall. His style icon is Darby Crash.

This is one of the rappers from World's Fair and his style icon is using women as living wigs.

This is Kurt from Black Bananas. According to him, his hair is influenced by total laziness and not caring. But then he revealed he had a lot of lotions and potions in his bathroom.

I used to have this same long curly hair/mustache combo. This is a solid party guy look. He kinda looks like an Edgar Allen Poe alien though.

This is another one of the guys from World's Fair. All of the guys in that rap group have distinct hair styles with the idea that they want to be recognizable even in silhouette. Also they did their best show yet at Emo's yesterday.

This is Nasty Nigel from Chidren Of The Night. His hair goes from slightly crazy to totally crazy depending on his mood.

These girls are just sea punks. I asked them about their hair and they just laughed at me.

This girl is like the Ariel of sea punks.

This is NOT a sea punk. This is Kitty Pryde. She is very shy and somehow also a style icon that young girls try to emulate.

This is Ileana who'd just been styled at the Style Stage launch to look like she was going to prom.

The girl on the right does the one on the left's hair and was pretty proud of her handiwork. The other girl seemed like she was sick of me pointing my camera at her.
