Here's an exclusive stream and download for "My Crew," a tentpole track on dancehall legend Vybz Kartel's upcoming release on VICE Records. The record is called "Kingston Story: Deluxe Edition," and it's being released on August 14, in conjunction with a video for "My Crew," made by VICE Global Editor Andy Capper in Jamaica.
We were trying to come up with the words to describe this little shitkicker, but then we got an email from Dre Skull, who produced it, and we thought we'd just leave it to him:

The outro says all you need to know: "My crew. We run it, we run it, we runnin' it." When I brought this track to Kartel, he asked me what I was picturing and I roughed up a deep voice and sang "My Crew" and told him to do something that he could bump in the club as a sort of anthem for his crew. Keep in mind at that time he had his own club in Kingston, The Building, that had walls covered in larger than life sized pictures of Kartel and that served his Street Vybz brand rum (which featured his picture on the bottle). When he was in the VIP section in The Building with his crew it was an understatement to say he was running things. I wanted this song to capture that vibe. Hearing that concept he took my quick notes and knocked this out in about an hour. |
You can pre-order the record right here, and check back on August 14 to see the video.
