Day Ravies Present a New Video (and New Sound) With “This Side of the Fence”

The Sydney poppers have changed direction slightly but still come through with the goods.

Sydney four piece poppers Day Ravies have a new album coming out early next year and if the sound of the first taster “This Side of the Fence” is any indication it could be a little different to their debut Tussle. Don’t worry it’s not a massive Bowie like game changer but the Krauty drum machine and synth moves away from the more shoegazey pop of Tussle. The video directed by bassist and vocalist Caro de Bear is more in line with their indie pop touch and features collage, grainy footage and randomness.

We caught up with Caro to find out more about the video and new album.

Noisey: Some of the images in the video look like they’re from children’s science textbooks. They seem weird backed by synths and drum machine.
Caro de Dear: We've all been obsessed with collaging lately, so incorporating them into our video seemed only natural. The song is very textural and choppy, so cut up images make sense. Even colourful and naive images have sinister possibilities. The song is a departure from Tussle. While one review that likened it to Nun may be going a little too far there’s a definite move to more electronics. Is this something to expect on the next album?
We have been much more confident and experimental with our next album. We have such a vast array of musical and artistic influences and have never wanted to limit ourselves to one genre. We learnt so much during the production of Tussle and it gave us the confidence to push our intentions further. The album not only features electronic instruments, woodwind instruments provide a new layer to some of the tracks, and vocal harmonies are much more prominent this time around.

You have a 7” coming out on French label Beko Disques next month. Did they get in touch via the usual “Hey I would like to put out your record” email (in French)?
Reno, the brain behind Beko, contacted us a while ago and has already put out a compilation, 'Oz Do it Better', on which we contributed a track. His enthusiasm, support and charming broken English were so endearing, we couldn't resist!

Day Ravies second album will be available through Pop Frenzy in early 2015.
