Client Liaison Find Inspiration From Blue-Eyed-Soul and Womack and Womack For their New Video "Queen"

The masters of Business Class Australiana drop the first single from their upcoming EP.

Shot on a mid 80s JVC VHS camcorder the latest video for [Client Liaison’s](http://www.clientliaison.com/ ) “Queen” is a tribute to Womack and Womack’s 1988 masterpiece “Teardrops”. From the three vocalists to the producers really ‘feeling it’ at the studio console, the video is inspired by a sound and time of large stonewashed jackets and Eddie Murphy’s prime.

Shot and directed by Client Liaison, Thomas Moody, Rhys Mitchell and Robert Frantzeskos, the video for the first single from their upcoming self-titled EP, has the masters of the Business Class Australiana genre showing off their strengths; big melody, big hair and a big sound.

Both Harvey and Monte of Client Liaison answered some questions while taking a break in the studio.

Noisey: The video has some pretty great 80s style production.

Harvey Miller: We chose to shoot “Queen” on a mid 80’s JVC VHS camcorder. This was quite an undertaking requiring us to source multiple spare parts for the one camera as well as the rebuilding of multiple batteries, cell by cell, as the old ones had biodegraded. What interests us in this technology is the Newvicon cathode ray tube, which is how the camera captures light – a much different process to modern day cameras, offering a distinct aesthetic point of difference from other readily available technologies today.

I'm curious as to what the couple are talking about when they first meet at the art exhibition.

Harvey Miller: The “Teardrops” reference was then extended upon with what we would consider to be a lost tradition within the music and film industries. That being when an artist would be commissioned to compose a Hollywood film soundtrack, to which they’d typically preform that song with snippets of the movie cut into it. Some notable examples may include Whitney Houston’s 'I Will Always Love You' or more recently Ronan Keating’s 'When You Say Nothing At All' .In line with this approach we filmed our own cinematic snippets to splice into the performance, hence the reason why there are so many dramatic head turns. The fate of this fictional story will never be known. One thing we do know is if this fictional film was ever released it would have surely bombed.

The lyric of ‘rising above’ in the track is very inspiring.

Monte Morgan: The song itself is a narrative of self-belief. With the ability to imagine yourself however you want, one can rise above their day-to-day schedule and shine beyond the confines of their own birth and death. The idea of blue-eyed-soul, a genre where white musicians perform R&B and soul music, played an important role in the genesis of this song. Starting out as more of a Country and Western sounding parable, the song slowly morphed into a gospel chorus of empowerment.
