King Tuff headlined a show at 285 Kent this past Saturday and everyone almost died from drowning in sweat. You entered the front door of 285 Kent and it was like entering a rainforest made of cinderblocks that was populated with some of the best people Brooklyn has to offer... and their stink.
My day started when Karen, the drummer from Habibi, came by my house and put on my Darth Vader helmet and told me about the things that were concerning her while I drew her as a feminine Darth Vader with little clear windows in the costume where the boobs were. On the way to 285, I discovered that Karen thought that H.P Lovecraft's watery monster Cthulu was pronounced "CHOOCHALOOTOO." I encourage everyone to pronounce Cthulu this way and pretend that you thought you were pronouncing it right. Habibi and King Tuff sound checked and then we all separated and came back around 9 for the show. The space had been uncomfortably hot and slimy when it was occupied by fifteen people but it was now overflowing with human bodies. The experience was exactly like being in a steam room that was humongous and full of fully dressed people who were smoking, drinking, and dancing.
The K-Holes were the first band I saw. They were incredible, but they always are. Next up were my pals in Habibi. Everyone seemed to go nuts for them and they did an encore. Afterwards Erin, the bassist, thought she smelled pee and realized that she had sweated out her urine. I was feeling kinda gross but all the sweating was actually invigorating. We would retreat into the cool, grey cinderblock labyrinth behind the stage for breaks from the thick heat of 285 Kent.
By the time King Tuff played, the club was at capacity and everyone was completely gross. King Tuff did an amazing set, performed an encore and everyone was stripping off their clothing and having a very positive freak-out. I took some photos with them afterwards and then headed over to SoulClap next door where Jonathan Toubin was DJing a strong soul music dance party to pretty girls and creepy dudes.
Here are the rest of my photos from the night:
Habibi is on tour with King Tuff right now. Go see them if you can:
